KIEV, Ukraine - 22nd of July, 2012 - Philippe Chiappe of the CTIC China Team came home with his first Match Race victory defeating defending champion Ahmed Al Hameli of Team Abu Dhabi for the top prize at the "President Cup" Trophy in front of thousands of enthusiastic race fans along the edge of the Kiev Sea in the city of Vyshgorod.
The French driver from Rouen, who has placed runner-up in the previous Match Races on the UIM F1 H2O World Championship tour, had a tough draw. He began by defeating first Finnish youngster 18 year-old rookie Filip Roms. In the Quarter-Finals it was American Shaun Torrente of the Qatar Team who jump started early giving Chiappe victory before moving on to win against Al Hameli's teammate Thani Al Qamzi to reach the finals.
"It turned out to be a great day for us and I was happy that my team could celebrate a great victory in this match race," said Philippe. "I like doing these events and finally, we won one!"
The third place run-off was a good close nip and tuck fight between rookie sensation Youssef Al Rubayan from Kuwait with the Atlantic F1 Team and Al Qamzi. Both fought hard and eventually it was Al Qamzi who won by just meters at the end.
So the fifth UIM F1 H2O Match Race closes with Chiappe winning after earlier today finishing fourth in the 2nd Annual Grand Prix of Ukraine. Over the years Francesco Cantando won in Seoul, Korea in 2004, Philippe Dessertenne of France won in Singapore in September 2005, while, Ivan Brigada of Italy won in Abu Dhabi in December of 2005. While Ahmed Al Hameli took the top ring here a year ago.
