DOHA, Qatar - 21st of November, 2013 - Swedish driver Jonas Andersson isn't always a big fan of looking back, but his "back to the future" history on the UIM F1 H2O World Championship is his only salvation. The lead driver of Team Azerbaijan hopes his recent strong performances can be turned into a victory for the second time in Doha at this Saturday's 11th Grand Prix of Qatar on Doha Bay.
"Yeah, I won here from pole position back in 2008 but haven't had much luck since," said the driver from Fruvi.
"I am really please with the way things are panning out," said Jonas. "I got a well earned fifth place in China after a sixth in Kyiv which has moved me up for a tie for sixth in the championship. We are still hopeful since there is still a little window to steal a title, only if, all the domino's fall in place."
Andersson, who has four victories on the tour since joining in Portimao, Portugal in the spring of 2006 has also recorded 11 podiums which is 21st all-time since the tour's beginnings in 1981.
"I think our team is now more stable than ever with my new teammate Terry Rinker who comes over from America," said Jonas. "Terry is a multi-time North American champion who gets down to business without to many demands from the team and has brought his own mechanics over and we all work well together."
Jonas has brought also over his long time friend and boat builder Christian Molgaard from Denmark to fine tune his race boat for its final round before getting a new race craft for next week's Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi.
"I feel very comfortable with the Molgaard and am really looking forward to racing the new boat next week," stated Andersson. "It's been 31 races since I last won an event and I am truly hungary to reach the top step soon and would love to have my dream reached here again in Doha where I won my first race six years ago."
This Saturday's event marks the 61st start for Jonas and the third for his teammate Terry Rinker who has reached the podium and two top-10's since he joined the tour part-time at the end of last season in Abu Dhabi.
Jonas is one of four drivers who are in the starting field who have won previously in Doha over the years. Ivan Brigada of the Caudwell Team in 2006; Thani Al Qamzi of Team Abu Dhabi in 2007 and Ahmed Al Hameli in 2012 for Team Abu Dhabi are looking for second wins in Doha Bay.
Guido Cappellini, the newest elected "Hall of Fame" enshrine, has won more than anyone with four victories followed by Jay Price, the American, who raced for Team Qatar winning in 2010 and again in 2011 for the "home team".
