Kazan, Tatarstan (Russia)- 16th July - Because the start pontoons had not arrived in Kazan, the F4S fleet were ordered to perform a rolling start behind the pace boat. They were instructed to follow the 2 seater F1 boat with its lights flashing and when they turned the top turn buoys, the pace boat would peel off to starboard, the lights would be turned off and the start would begin.
Saleh Al Shamlan in the Qatar boat was fastest in qualifying so he had pole position ahead of Mat Palfreyman of Team Atlantic and Team Sweden's Bimba Sjoholm. However the instructions did not appear to register with Al Shamlan and as the paceboat peeled off he followed it, indeed one or two others did the same.
Thankfully, championship leader Bimba Sjoholm followed the correct procedure and headed for the correct turn followed by Palfreyman and those two led the way throughout although at the chequered flag the Swedish girl had built up a healthy lead over her male rival.
Al Shamlan collected his thoughts after his earlier error to chase the leading duo to the finish while China's Xiong Ziwei filled 4th place a lap down. Because Abu Dhabi's drivers were either racing in Class 1 in Norway or banned (Al Hameli) Qatar's Kuwairi Al Khaled was recruited to drive the Abu Dhabi to gain experience for his Nations Cup debut later in the year.
Sadly he gained little experience as the boat lost power after three laps and retired on lap 6. Recently crowned World GT30 champion Christian Carlsen filled 7th place behind Tobias Munthe-Kaas and Filip Roms.
