Figueira da Foz is a large, popular seaside resort on the Atlantic coast directly west of Coimbra.
The town is on the north bank of the Mondego River as it flows in to the sea. Figueira is around 200 km north of the capital Lisbon and approximately 120 km south of Porto on the so-called Silver Coast (Costa de Prata).
Especially popular with domestic tourists as well as visitors from Spain, Figueira is well-known for its casino and very wide beach, crossed by wooden boardwalks as well as its excellent surf at Cabedelo Beach.
The town is situated at the wide mouth of the Mondego River as it reaches the Atlantic.Historical records from the 11th century show that the area had been settled by at least that date.
It was ship-building and the cod drying trade to produce Bacalhau, one of Portugal's national dishes, that led to the development of Figueira in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Its rise as a resort only began in the 1920's and 1930's.
