North Sumatra is one of the leading tourism destinations in Indonesia. based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) In 2019, the number of foreign tourist visits in this province reached 258,822 people. However, this number decreased drastically in 2010 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The North Sumatra government is targeting the number in 2023 foreign tourists can reach 500 thousand people. To achieve this target, sport tourism become a flagship program so that it can attract more and more foreign tourists visited North Sumatra.
Lake Toba as one of the Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP) certainly requires more efforts to attract domestic and foreign tourists. What's more, the Government is pushing domestic tourist arrivals up to 1.3 billion trips in 2023.
